If you never ask, the answer is always no.

Engagement, along with good & consistent content, keeps the algorithm happy. Over the years, I’ve experimented with many strategies across different platforms, and I always return to the basics when my profile isn't performing well. I try my best to keep learning to make sure I am giving the best quality content, and I keep in touch with my community. Here are five tips I use to maintain high engagement on social media:

  1. I “warm up the algorithm” before & after I post (10-15 mins). I go to my “Following & Favorites” feed (those who I follow which usually are following me as well), and I leave real authentic comments on as many posts as I can watch; no only letting those Creators know I care about their community, but potentially bumping me up on their feed.

  2. I don't respond to all notifications and DMs immediately; this way, I have some conversations to continue after I post (10-15 mins). Anything that needs an immediate response, or related to my latest post or a viral post, I answer right away to maintain steady activity on that content. After I post, I also respond to any polls I’ve had in stories to start DM conversations (I try to do 2-3 polls per week because they let me get to know my community, but also allows me to start conversations with those engaged in my content).

  3. I engage with new people (10-15 mins per day). This continues to teach the algorithm what I am interested in, has helped me make tons of new friends, helps me stay updated with trends, find content inspiration or brands to pitch later.

  4. Skip the emoji-only replies. I get it, sometimes we just want to support real quick, or all we have to say is “ 😂 “, and thats okay as long as it’s not every single time. Use actual words. Show that Creator you paid attention and actually watched it.

  5. End captions with a question and then use it. I use this question to continue conversations in the comments section. Usually, these questions also help me learn more about my audience, which I can potentially use in my daily life or for more content inspiration.

Engagement is all about strategy, content that helps people or makes them feel, and authenticity. If you take care of your friends, they will take care of you. As a creator, it's important to have other creator friends, because we understand how things work better than those who don't do this, so we know engagement is key, but it has to go both ways for it to be consistent. Spending an intentional hour or so on social media daily is better than scrolling for hours each day.
